How to Lose Weight After Birth
After giving birth, one of the first questions many new moms ask is how to lose weight after birth.
Let’s face it. It’s no fun, and not very flattering to top it off, to have to wiggle into maternity pants AFTER the birth. It doesn’t feel very sexy. So you want to learn how to lose weight after birth as soon as possible.
Did you know that the average woman gains 25-35 pounds at birth! Ouch. Of course, some of that is the weight of the baby and extras fluids. But you can only expect to lose about 13 pounds at birth.
That leaves 12-22 pounds to lose by other means. Losing any weight is tough. But how to lose weight after birth is especially tough; you’re sore, your hormones are all out of whack, and now with a new baby, you’re not getting enough sleep, and time is gone.
Here are five things that I learned about how to lose weight after birth that really helped me:
1. I had to change my mindset about how to lose weight after birth.
Not long after giving birth, I was lounging on the couch watching TV. An infomercial for the latest exercise program came on. A testimonial from a “new mom” was presented claiming this “new” program was how to lose weight after birth. This “new mom” said that using this program she was able to lose her baby fat in only 6 weeks.
Hear me now. This is NOT how to lose weight after birth. It’s not realistic. It’s not real. Most likely, it’s unhealthy. You need to change your mind set to gradual weight loss. Slow and steady wins this race. This is really how to lose weight after birth.
2. Drink lots of water.
I’m talking 10-12 glasses per day. A lot of women, myself included, retain water after birth. The way to get rid of this extra weight is to drink water. You’ll be cleansing your body of unwanted toxins at the same time.
3. Start slowly with exercises.
The key to how to lose weight after birth with exercise is to take it easy. Really. I always liked packing my new baby into stroller and taking a walk around the block. Often I was joined by other moms. I loved those walk ‘n talks.
4. Keep healthy snacks around.
This one was/is tough for me. I love chocolate. Just like my mom, I love Hershey chocolate bars. I used to keep a drawer full of just these. No smart. It seemed that every time I passed the drawer I was stopping for a “little” snack. I always promised myself just one of two square. Ha! Yeah right.
Finally, I realized that I just couldn’t have them around. I started stocking the drawer with dried fruit and nuts. I’ve really grown to like them. (I do miss the Hershey bars every once in awhile.)
5. Breastfeed
Now I realize that some women just can’t breastfeed. That’s OK. I’m not fanatical about it. But for those of you who can, I highly recommend it.
This is one of the easiest ways of how to lose weight after birth for a new mom. You burn about 500 calories throughout the day when you breastfeed. That’s a lot. That’s a strong aerobic exercise routine.
