You might think this strange, but the first thing I asked for after giving birth to my first kid was a scale. Most women don’t want to see the scale after birth, but I was already thinking about how to lose weight after delivery.
I figured that I would at least lose the weight of the baby. Plus the fluids, etc. I hoped I would magically lose some extra pounds too. I thought that I would jump off the birthing table into my old jeans.
OK. So, I’m exaggerating a bit. But I honestly thought that I would lose more weight than I did. I was disappointed in the scale. One look at my stretchmarked abdomen only confirmed that the skinny jeans would remain in the closet, at least for now.
I didn’t want to look pregnant when I wasn’t. I wanted to get back to pre-pregnancy shape, pronto!
Let’s be honest here for a second. If you were a size 12 before your pregnancy, you’re most likely not going to be a size 6 after, let alone a size zero.
I didn’t want to suddenly be a supermodel (I don’t think that’s healthy, anyway, by the way), but I did want my husband to give me that double-take look, he always did before. So I needed to learn how to lose weight after delivery pronto.
Here’s what I learned about how to lose weight after delivery:
1) Take it slow. I’m not kidding. I went crazy with dieting and exercising. Because of this, I only got to breastfeed for 6 months. This was a great disappoint for me.
2) Check with your doctor, especially if you have a female doctor. She’ll be able to recommend a plan of action for how to lose weight after delivery that won’t be too drastic.
3) Don’t compare yourself to unrealistic model, tv, or movie star bodies. It’s just not right. It’s not healthy a lot of the time. Compare yourself to you. And remember not to be too hard on yourself. You just spent 9 months eating for two and gaining the weight, after all.
4) Remember you might be retaining fluid, so drink a lot of water. 10-12 glasses a day is a good range to shoot for.
5) Breastfeed. This is a huge one. Remember how I said I had to stop breastfeeding. Well, it turns out that breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways of how to lose weight after delivery. No kidding. I probably would have burned more calories breastfeeding than with my exercise regiment. The bonus here is that you’ll build a stronger bond with your child.
6) Look for the easy ways to exercise: park further away, take a walk around the block, buy a good/easy exercise dvd.
7) You may want to join a gym. I say may, because I have never been big on the gym thing. It takes so much stickin’ time. But if that’s your thing, by all means go! Besides, they might have some good tips on how to lose weight after delivery.
Watch your food intake. (But remember, not too drastically.) Eat whole grains, lean meats (chicken, lean beef), and avoid fast food.
Well that’s how to lose weight after delivery, at least according to me. I hope that these tips have helped. Good luck in your weight loss.
